HVAC Air Filter Guide: MERV Ratings, Sizes, and Replacement

Home HVAC air filter being replaced

Your HVAC filter helps protect system components and reduces the amount of dust circulated through the home. Choosing the right filter requires more than finding one that fits; filtration level and airflow both matter.

Find the Correct Filter Size

Look for dimensions printed on the frame of the existing filter. The nominal size, such as 16 × 25 × 1, may differ slightly from the filter’s actual measured dimensions. Use the size specified for your filter cabinet or return grille rather than forcing a close match into place.

What Does MERV Mean?

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. A higher rating generally means the filter can capture smaller particles. However, a filter that is too restrictive for the system can reduce airflow. Follow equipment guidance or ask an HVAC professional which range is appropriate for your blower and ductwork.

How Often Should You Change It?

There is no single schedule for every home. One-inch filters often need inspection every month and replacement when visibly loaded. Thicker media filters may last longer. Homes with pets, remodeling dust, frequent system use, or occupants sensitive to airborne particles may need more frequent changes.

Install the Filter in the Correct Direction

Most filters have an airflow arrow printed on the frame. The arrow should point toward the blower or air handler. Installing it backward can affect how the filter sits in the rack and how air moves through the filter media.

Signs the Filter Needs Attention

Watch for visible dirt, reduced airflow, longer heating or cooling cycles, dust collecting near supply vents, or a filter that bends or collapses. If a clean filter does not improve airflow, the system may have another restriction that requires professional inspection.
